~ WELCOME e-MARGONAUTS :: Greetings from e-Margaux
It’s official! Condé Nast Publications has offered Margaux Europe
Group, Ltd. $7.5 million in a leveraged buyout to purchase
e-Margaux.com and e-Marginalia.com, BUT they will strictly regulate
all content to ensure maximum advertising potential effective April
1, 2004.
April Fools!
It hasn’t happened. Not yet. As you can imagine, virtually the
entire travel and leisure publishing industry has been beating a
path to our door with tempting offers… But so far, we’ve resisted
these charming suitors. In a more honest vein, the folks beating a
path to our door, or at least flooding our email, are the travel
story writers. And, to be perfectly frank, nothing could make me
happier. That’s what e-Margaux is all about, real people telling
stories. Thank you. And even if we don’t select your story for
publication, don’t give up. Write another. Travel often. And tell
your stories even often-er. I’ll even be announcing a travel writing
contest soon, so there’ll be plenty of opportunities to be published
down the winding road.
A little news update. You may have noticed some changes on the site
lately. We’re mid-stream on implementing some upgrades, so you may
experience some growing pains as we work out the kinks over the
coming weeks. The goal is to make the site more user-friendly, so
hopefully by the time we are done you’ll be glad to have stuck it
out with us. If you happen upon a function that isn’t working, a
link that is broken or just an old fashioned error, please don’t
hesitate to email us.
Something else new. Scroll on down the newsletter and you’ll find a
new section called “Amazing Deals” which we’ll include in each new
mailing as a way to spread the word about spectacular travel
savings. If you know of a promotion that you’d like us to include
send me an email with all of the information and I’ll follow up with
you about including it in an upcoming newsletter.
One last note before you read the latest “Meandering Margaux” about
my recent trip to St. Thomas. It saddens me to pass along some bad
news: the Savvy Traveler is no more. Unfortunately insufficient
funding has prompted them to pull the plug after almost seven years
of exceptional broadcasts. I obviously don’t need to tell you what a
loss this is for travelers. According to the notice posted at
http://savvytraveler.publicradio.org/, “The site will be available
for the indefinite future, replete with audio, text, online
resources and a searchable database of program information to enrich
and hopefully inspire the savvy traveler in you.” There is some
relief in that, but it probably wouldn’t hurt to drop an email
thanking Minnesota Public Radio for a great run with this program
and encouraging them to maintain the website for years to come.
Okay, e-Margonauts, on to the good stuff. Thanks for reading another
issue of e-Marginalia. I hope that you enjoy it.
Best,
George Davis

~ MEANDERING MARGAUX :: Mostly Ritzy St. Thomas, by George Davis
Upon "deplaning" at the Cyril E. King International Airport in
St. Thomas, I savored the warm, humid embrace, familiar to anyone
who has abandoned the dry chill of winter for the tropics. I
shrugged off my blazer as we walked across the pavement to the
terminal. Good bye, New York. Hello, St. Thomas.
We were six adults and two children. Eight enthusiastic Caribbean
worshippers already daydreaming about how to spend the next ten days
of leisure. The golfers fantasized about sub-par-ing dramatic ocean
front holes. The four and six year olds asked for the umpteenth time
about the pools, the kiddy program, the submarine ride. Our minds
drifted to effervescent music, exotic meals and pampering massages.
And I, invariably drawn to water like a moth to light, previewed my
swimming and boating options...
Our reveries dwindled as we were swept up in the current of
bodies being disgorged from the airplanes into a sort of hanger that
serves as the baggage claim area. It was a little surprising to
arrive in a relatively small airport, mid-afternoon on a Thursday,
and yet be overwhelmed by the throngs of people. Too many bodies to
navigate easily or to locate our greeter and driver from the Ritz
Carlton, so we divided.

~ FEATURE STORY :: Motorcycles in Cambodia, by Laura Siciliano
It was a place I never
thought I would find myself: squashed between a hired driver and my
impossibly full backpack on the surprisingly hard seat of a 250cc
motorcycle...

~ FEATURE STORY :: Ducking Through Scandinavia, by Tasneem
My friend Amelie and I
were discussing our respective travel-bugs and our never-ending
competition to visit at least one new country each year. When she
suggested that we both travel somewhere, anywhere, together, I
whimsically accepted the offer...

~ FEATURE STORY :: The Outback, by Jamie C. Welling
From the moment I made my
decision to live in Australia I dreamt of sleeping in the Outback.
Finally I was on the plane…

~ FEATURE STORY :: Italy's Wine Towns, by Nancy DiDio
After our first trip to
Italy many years ago, my husband Fred and I fell in love with the
country... we saw the many famous cities and sights that are on
every tourist’s itinerary, but with each visit we ventured further
off the beaten track…
